Project Overview
Potenza is a retail project designed around the principles of Wabi-Sabi, the Japanese aesthetic philosophy that finds beauty in imperfection, impermanence, and authenticity. The project explores how existing architectural conditions can become an integral part of the design narrative rather than elements to be concealed or corrected.
Within a 150-square-meter space, the design transforms traces of age and wear into meaningful spatial qualities, creating a retail environment that feels both contemporary and deeply rooted in its own history.
Design Concept
At the heart of the project lies the belief that imperfections carry value. Inspired by Wabi-Sabi, the design embraces material aging, irregular textures, and visible signs of time, allowing the space to tell its own story through its surfaces and details.
Instead of pursuing visual perfection, the project celebrates authenticity, simplicity, and the unique character that emerges through use and transformation.
Materiality & Architectural Expression
The philosophy is expressed through a restrained yet intentional material palette:
• Exposed concrete walls with preserved cracks and irregular textures.
• Visible cement repairs that highlight rather than conceal the aging process.
• A combination of aged ceramic flooring and cement surfaces, creating a dialogue between history and intervention.
• Raw material finishes that reinforce a sense of honesty and permanence.
Each material was selected not only for its visual qualities but also for its ability to communicate the passage of time and the value of imperfection
Postmodern Influence
The project is further informed by postmodern perspectives that challenge conventional design boundaries. Through the juxtaposition of contrasting elements, the space creates a balance between:
• Tradition and innovation.
• Aging and renewal.
• Authenticity and contemporary retail experience.
This approach allows the existing character of the space to coexist with new interventions, producing a layered and meaningful environment.
Spatial Experience
Potenza is conceived as more than a retail destination. It is a space that encourages observation, reflection, and engagement with materiality. Every surface, texture, and architectural detail contributes to a narrative of transformation and resilience.
The raw concrete, repaired imperfections, and aged materials collectively create an atmosphere that feels honest, timeless, and emotionally resonant.
Outcome
The final result is a retail environment where imperfection becomes a defining feature rather than a limitation. By combining the philosophy of Wabi-Sabi with a contemporary design language, Potenza offers a unique spatial experience that celebrates simplicity, authenticity, and the enduring beauty of time.
The project invites visitors to discover value in imperfection and to experience architecture as a living record of change, memory, and identity.
